season nickel plating?
« on: January 31, 2014, 05:47:56 PM »
I just found what I think is a nickel Wagner "Krusty Korn Kobs" Junior. My question is-can I use electrolisis to clean it and then is it OK to season it as I do regular cast iron or will the seasoning process not get thru the plating? Thanks in advance

Steve,
Unless the plating is chipping off the electro will not hurt it ..season as you would any other piece but... don't season the plating, it will just darken it and the plating was put there to keep the iron from rusting anyhow.

I would clean it in the lye bath for certain.

If the plating is intact, electro is fine.

I don't like to put flaking pieces into my electro though.

I actually try to not buy any plated pieces.  (a few rare exceptions to that)

Seasoning will not 'get thru' a plated surface.  It will lay on top.  Seasoning plating will turn it a brownish color sometimes blotchey.
