Martin Spider

Found a Martin Spider today, thought I'd share. Overall as most Martin's it is on the small size, it is 9 1/2" diameter, where when Lodge says 10 or 12 they mean, and you get 10" or 12" in diameter. Overall quality I'd give it a C. I plan on keeping it, but not the best quality wise. When you see the pics you'll see what I mean. This one does have the KS&R Co. on the underside of the lid.

The lid has, like Lodge a retaining groove that does a good job on keep the lid on, but the fit, not all that good. Look at the next pic. If you go up from between the left most two fingers you will see an external notch. There are 5 of these on this lid, apparently the pattern maker made the retaining groove to small so they added something on the pattern to try to make the lid diameter larger so it would fit better into the oven part of the spider. The next pic of the top of the lid shows the overall unevenness of this lid. The ridge inside the coal retaining ring wobbles and weaves like a sailor on leave. Overall not the best quality work, but you don't see spiders that often, and Martins even less, so I got her.  :)

Nice one Dwayne.  Most of the #10 lids I see have the mark on them.  Nice find. ;)

Does anyone else have this one? If so, does yours have those external notches making the lid groove wider?

The only sizes I have marked are 10's.  And only the marked ones have the notches.

mine does not have any tabs or the KS & R, and fits very well on the spider with no side slop.  But then I got my # 10 and # 11 Martin spiders ( without lids ) at Round Top the year we stoped and saw you Dwayne, then I later got the #10 lid fron Duke.  Found the # 12 Martin spider the next day in that antique shop about the middle of Amarillo, before we headed north.

Thanks you all. One more favor, can a couple of you post what the legs look like on your KS&R Co #10 look like. You know me I like to double check. I'm 99% sure it is not a marriage, but....Stranger things have happened.
