Hi Ron!  Welcome to WAGS...

What you have there is a Wagner Stylized Smooth Bottom with C/N (catalog number) circa 1935 to 1959.

The number 8 (ps.. the last of the 4 numbers is the size) is one of the more common sizes, so you did okay at $8.00..

A perfect, excellent, cleaned and restored #8 might bring $30 or so...

Lots of folks forget that finding them in the wild is "buyer assumes all risks"  :) :)

Here's hoping that it cleans up nicely, with no warp in or out, etc ;)

I probably would have given $8 if I didn't already have more of those than I can remember...  ;D

I think you did great for $8!! Around here, if it says Wagner on it, they always jack up the price. Probably $40 or $45. A Griswold in that size, is usually around $65. Of course, we see tons of BSR and Lodge around here and not as many Wagners and Griswolds. Pricing also depends on where you find it. If it is an antique mall, the prices are higher. If it is a single owner shop out in a small town, prices are lower.

I found it at an estate sale that was kinda put together in a hurry. It was setting off to itself with other odds and ends in the living room. I guess I got lucky.

Welcome to WAGS, Ron.  You will find that sometimes luck is what collecting cast iron is all about.

After doing some stripping down to the bare metal I found an "F" stamped on the underside of the handle toward the base. I suppose this is some type of indicator?

Most likely a Pattern mark that may have been used to indicate the position on the pattern, or some other indicator for the manufacturer...
