Screwed up.... set hot skillet on hotpad
« on: May 14, 2017, 08:19:19 PM »
So, we have this new range.  It has an induction top and we don't yet have the new set of pots/pans that are to be included in the purchase. (provided by Kitchenaid)

I know you can buy an 'induction pad' or something like that which will heat up and transfer the heat to whatever you have that is not induction ready.

Ok, so who needs to buy one of those when you have come cast iron which works great on an induction system?

(can you see it coming yet?  :-?)

Wife wanted some pasta boiled.

Set a Griswold #8 skillet on the stove started warming it up.  Popped the measuring cup into the microwave to get it boiling.

Skillet is getting hot so set a copper bottom pot inside the (otherwise bare) skillet.

Water in microwave starts to boil so pour into pot, which is in skillet, which is on burner.

Put a second 2-cups into microwave to get more water hot.

Water in microwave started to boil, water in pot is "slighly" boiling (bubbles forming but no real roiling of the water like it was in the microwave)

Meanwhile, the skillet is starting to smoke a bit.  (it's had some butter, bacon in it)

Got everything done and wanted to get the now very hot skillet off the glass top of the stove so, pulled out a fancy dancy hot-mitten that was in the drawer.

Set the mitten, which is designed to grab hot items, down on the iron griddle I have.

Set the skillet on the mitten.

(figuring it out yet?  :-[ )

Finished preparing the ravioli for the wife....  went to grab the skillet to get it off the hot-mitt....and it lifted the hot-mitt up with it.

I pulled the mitt off and 'splotches' of the mitt were stuck to the bottom of the skillet.

A bit irked with myself, I set it back down to cool and haven't yet looked at it.

Bottom line, it's looking like pieces (like a quarter in size) of the mitt have stuck to the skillet.  I don't know yet if it melted or if it will peel / scrub off.

Wondering if anyone has any thoughts before I go see it, get upset and hit myself over the head with said skillet??!

I'm sorry all this happened, but I don't understand your process at all, just to cook pasta. I don't understand why the use of a microwave. A skillet to cook pasta? I have coked pasta probably 1000 times and watched on TV maybe that many times, but never have I seen that process. Get a pot, add some water and a pinch or two of salt. Get the water hot, add the pasta, test for doneness, I like it al dente, dump into a colander, put the hot empty pot on something that won't burn. Finished.

C.B., he has a new induction stove. The only things that will heat up on it are magnetic metals. Copper, aluminum, glass and most SS won't, so he used a CI pan as a transferring device for the copper bottom pot he was using for the pasta. I don't know why he heated the water in the microwave first except maybe to speed the process?

Did I clear that up or just make it more confusing?

I just finished some research on induction. I'll stick to gas for the top, electric for the oven.

I would take a knife and see if it wouldn't just scrap off.

I've not fiddled with it much.  Looks like the mitten adhered to the skillet but, didn't "melt" to it.  Parts of it come off like peeling a layer of burned skin off your arm...  (ewwww, gross analogy but you get the idea) and other parts are firmly attached.

I'm scratching my head a bit but, the wife wanted 12 trees cut down....  about 8 yards of mulch spread...  things like that so I set the skillet aside.

As has been clarifed, it's an induction stove so I need a magnetic item to make it work.  I have the iron skillets but none of my pots work so I have to use something between.

That said, they (Kitchenaid) are giving an entire set of skillets & pots that are induction ready as a 'gift' (ha) for the purchase.  I won't mind the pots, but the skillets will probably be useless to me (prefer the CI)

I am on a well here so my water comes out fairly cool.  I put the water in the microwave as you guessed.....to speed up the heating process.  I knew setting the pot in the skillet would be the slow path so the hotter I can start, the sooner I have a boil.  Even at that, I had a weak boil (I didn't turn the stove up all the way either, I've had it shut down from the CI getting TOO hot on the sensor)

Parts of the bottom of the skillet look like the seasoning has burned off (I'm guessing 'burned' off, parts of the skillet look like naked cast iron, not black like the rest of it)

It WAS black prior so I think the heat got to it and this skillet is heading for a re-do to get it back in shape.

I dunked it into an electrolysis tank when I bought it....I'm wondering if that process will also loosen this stuff.  I've tried a knife blade (butter knife) and it wasn't sharp enough to slice between the adhesion.  Soaking might help but then I see some rusting issues, hence my thoughts on a re-do of the seasoning.

If I had just let it sit there & cool...

Oh, and I'd LOVE to have gas.  I live about 15 miles out of town and don't have any gas nearby (zero natural)

When we built, the wife was horrified on using propane for anything however, over the years, she's "allowed" a ventless propane fireplace to be installed.

Still....  without ripping all the walls open, I don't have the plumbing in place to even use the propane.

(and I'd really prefer NG, having grown up with it)

This all electric stuff is for the birds.

Guess I'd better start chirping!

If it has removed some of the seasoning, you might as well stick it in a lye bucket, strip the whole thing, and reseason it.

Or, I wonder if putting the damaged skillet in a larger skillet and boiling it would work? Maybe boil off the melted oven mitt? Still, the seasoning might look a little splotchy.

I'm not worried about reseasoning the skillet.  I'd prefer to not use lye if I can get around it...  hate sniffing it like everyone else I suppose.

Still....it might be a good idea.  It would certainly be easier than setting up the tank again.  The tank is doable.....just more work.

Hadn't thought of the lye.

I don't really think it's melted per se' to it.  I say that because parts DO peel off.

This morning, I turned skillet bottom side up & moistened entire bottom with some peanut oil in the (futile?) hopes that if the oil soaked into it during the day, it might loosen things.

Not sure that worked....and now I have a stuck, oily skillet.

Maybe I should stop digging while I'm ahead

The Rest of the Story:

Wife suggested I use grinder to remove stuck glove bits.  I said nope, only if nothing (literally nothing) else works but I don't think it will be a problem.

Got some Easy Off....soaked bottom, left overnight in plastic bag...

Today, rinsed off and took a stiff 'auto parts cleaning brush' (looks like a large round fat painters stipple brush)

Anyways, used that to scrub....and it all came off.  Washed rest of pan and it's now in oven baking in a thin layer of crisco.

That stuff was really stuck!!

I wish I'd taken a picture but, I didn't so pardon the lack of visuals.

That is why all towels and hot pads(pot holders) except for the ovgloves are 100 percent cottonin my kitchen. They my burn but they won't melt.

Now if I could just get my wife not to grab the dry towel by the stove to wipe up a spill or dry a dish. That's what the towel by the sink is for not the dry towel by the stove.
