Plated bail
« on: November 06, 2023, 11:05:03 AM »
This might be another stupid question.
I'm going to strip an old Lodge #12 camp dutch oven in my lye bath.
Question is, do I need to remove the bail before I do?
A magnet sticks to the bail so it's not stainless. Will I damage the plating on the bail in the lye?

Thanks in advance.

Craig, I don't believe I have ever seen a 'plated' bail.

They are usually tempered steel.

I never attempt to remove a bail... ever... I am a 90 lb. weakling... :cheesy:

I process them attached to item, thru the lye bath and the electro.........

and shine them up with a little Mother's or another polish if needed (which is rarely).... a wipe with 000 or 0000 steel wool is usually all that is needed....

OK thanks.
I just assumed that since I've never seen one with rust that it was probably plated like a Weber grill grate.
