Steve, I process my plated (previously used for cooking) items in the lye bath with a gentle wash down with non abrasive sponges.
Then I assess for possible 'rust'.
If condition appears to be good to excellent, I would recommend using Evaporust to insure that any break through rust is handled gently and quickly.
Full and complete submersion with no air pockets is always important when using Evapo....
