BSR Sportsman manufacture date
« on: September 01, 2019, 03:30:25 PM »
Inherited a BSR Sportsman grill from a Great Uncle about 25 years ago.

I remember it being used on family hunting and fishing trips as a kid.

Looking to find the approximate date of manufacture.

It has four legs which makes it an earlier model.

It has a sliding draft door that makes it perhaps a second generation model?

She went underwater during the Hurricane Harvey flood and needs some cleaning up.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks for the welcome, but..........

From what little information I have found and the fact I remember this stove being used back when I was 8 or 9 years old, some 50 years ago, I have to question your guesstimate.

It has the four footed design and no way to attach legs, indicting, again from what little information I have found,  it is a much earlier model.

Not that anything other than it belonged to my favorite Uncle matters, any other opinions?

Since it has a draft door, it is a later 4-legged grill. The wording on the coal door would be different if it was from the 1970's. I would put this one at mid-to-late 1940's.
And may the odds forever be in your favor that it gets restored and re-seasoned sooner than later.

From an article in the "
Casting Call", WAGS news letter, 3rd quarter, 2015, by Jeff Friend.  Shows your Sportsman being from the 40s.
Patent was applied for Dec. 2, 1940
Utility Parent issued March 23, 1943, assigned to ASW.

Thanks for the information.

Are there copies of the "Casting Call" newsletter available or will I need to join WAGS to access the newsletter?

AT the top of this board, you will see pinned post categories with a TON of additional, free information, on the Sportsman Grill evolution, including the actual patents, trademark data from USPTO, brochures from the Sportsman Trademark packets, and many, many ASW/BSR catalogs.....

And Dwayne's latest Historical Time line...
(although we do have even More information to expand that in the future... :) :)

Can you post pics of the bottom of the grill?

Thanks Ken,  yup it one of the later 4 leg grills. Some of these will have numbers on the parts, some dont.
