FWIW - SS Corrosion
« on: November 08, 2005, 11:01:43 PM »
To get ready for the 55 gal. SS barrel I order from Perry, I empted my SS beer keg I’ve been using for an electro bath and found some rust/corrosion in one spot.  I’ve run this barrel, at around 20 amps, almost constantly for approximately 4 months.  Before this, I used a large SS stock pot for about a year and I also noticed some similar corrosion when I stopped using it.  I don’t consider this a big deal but I remember someone (I think maybe Darrel) asking about SS corrosion lately.

Speaking of SS barrels, has anybody got theirs yet? I sent some of them out on Friday, I could've rolled them there by now. I am anxious to hear some feedback as to how you all like them.

Gary, that is interesting.  I checked the piece in my electrobath and couldn't find anything at all and it's been going for a year now.  I wonder why it does that to some, but not others?

Perry, nothing yet.  Will let you know as soon as it arrives.

The answer is because there are different grades of SS and the thickness of the SS is also a factor. I couldn't swear to it but it I do believe the beer keg to be very thin. These barrels I sent out are very heavy gauge SS and they are of the highest grade there is. We used them to process meat in, so they had to be a good grade. And the reason we used SS barrels is because they would not rust. Thats my story and I'm stickin to it. These barrels weigh over 40 lbs. so there is a lot to them.

Hi Perry,

I haven't seen mine yet but I have a spot all cleaned out for it and I'm anxious to get it.  I'll for sure let you know when it arrives.

As far as the corrosion goes it's like you said, there are different grades of SS and in some cases a little corrosion may occur but so what - IMO it's no big deal.

I KNEW IT!!!!!!!  The other night I was on my knees, thanking the Good Lord for sending me such a dear friend as Perry, who was going out of his way to send me this nice stainless steel barrel.  Well, a quiet voice whispered through the air....."don't send the check just yet."  Puzzled, I asked the Lord why?

Again, the Lord whispered to me, "Do you know what the C. before Perry stands for?"  I replied, "no Lord, what?"

"Well," says the Lord, "it should be three C's.........he real name is Check Cashin' Charlie P. Rapier.  Wait till that barrel arrives before you put the check in the mail."

So you see, Perry, I will have to wait until the spirit moves me to send the dough.

Wait a minute Marty, I'm confused.  Isn't the spirits moved in the Keg that Gary posted and not Perrys Barrels?

Perry, it arrived this morning.  When you ship the others out you might want to put the stickers with an arrow that shows this side up because they shipped it upside down and all the water drained out of it.  Other than that, it's in great shape.

They were supposed to come sideways, its cheaper that way. If I gave them the measurements standing up it cost 128.00 to send them. If I gave them the measurements sideways it was right around 20.00, so my point is if any of them barrels come standin up and the drives wants the other 108.00, you all are responsible for that. As far as the water let me know and I'll send a truck down, they won't work without Ohio water, I didn't tell you all to start with.

We're gettin some mileage out of these barrels on the forum. I am looking forward to hearin what you all have to say when you start firin them up. One WAGS member picked 4 of them up this morning that he ordered at the convention.

Perry, you mentioned "good grade". Stainless steel is made in many "different alloys and not necessarily a grade. Each has it's place and what it is best at. #316 and #18-8 are both non-ferus and used extensivly in the marine industry for example. There are many more alloys, called stainless steel, and as it's name implies it is not stain proof, but it stains less. That "hot spot" on Gary's beer keg looks like a piece of iron got a bit too close, otherwise why would it only happen in one isolated spot?

C.B., I understand what you are saying and it makes all the sense in the world. I am only using "good grade" in a generic way realizing that there are different qualities of SS, some better than others.

Perry, glad I picked my barrells up. Might not have ever seen them huh?  ;D ;D ;D                                 Got one all set up and put a #10 WAGNER D.O. in. When I took it out I found a crack in the side that I couldn't see untill it was clean. I hope this is not a recurring sight.    :'( :'( :'( :'(     Will have to get some pictures this weekend.

Yes Joe, you messed up my whole routine. I was planning on taking you to the cleaners as well, but you nixed my deal by picking them up. Tell your wife I still got them butcher block tables. They'd look good in her kitchen, or anybodys kitchen for that matter.

Perry,
After more than a year running the SS barrel, my Ohio water is almost too low to do any more cleaning.  Can you send me some more of that water ASAP?  tx!!

I got some ohio water I'd be glad to send to somebody for just half the price of CPR's stuff.  I guarantee my water to work just as well as his!

Dollars signs are rolling in front of my eyes.  Lets see, I can describe it like this.

Get your "Ohio" water here.  Good for all electrolysis systems and does an especially good job of cleaning cast iron.

I wonder what it will take to get the county to officially re-mark their maps to indicate that the spring on my property is now the "Ohio"?  Never mind the fact that I intend to ship ordinary rain water.

Gee, I'd be a good fake iron seller!
