Perry's barrels
« on: December 12, 2005, 10:25:42 AM »
Set mine up this weekend. I actually cleaned two camp ovens. I didn't multi rig but did the lid and then the bottom. I got to say it worked great. I didn't get the current I had expected but it certainly did a great, fast job.

I put a wooden dowel rod across the top and hung wire hooks down to suspend the items to be cleaned. I attached the negative lead directly to the piece to be cleaned and it worked like a champ. I suppose I will modify it a bit to do multiple pieces but for now it works just fine.

Thanks Perry for going out of your way to make these available. My shoot from the hip answer is I like mine just fine. Can't think of a better way to improve it. Well worth the investment.

Not a problem Troy. I hope everybody that got one will maybe let us know what they did, or modified them, or did something different. I am always willing to learn something new. Thanks for sharing any ideas, you all.

Wally......If you go to "See Perry's Barrels Here" in this same section, you will see some pictures of a set-up.

The amps read higher than I'm used to, but the negative lead didn't heat up.

Roger, that looks beautiful. Thanks for sharing the up to date barrel reports. The only thing I do different than what you have done is, I use a piece of 1/2 in rebar across the top, that sticks out over the sides.

I think what you had better do is send that to me and let me do a closer inspection and then when I get done lookin at it, I'll send it back to you someday, maybe, in due time, whenever I'm ready, most likely never.

Let me know when you send it so I'll know when to wade the creek to get to the mailbox.

I like the 'holy' angle iron that you use and the foam insulation around the rim.  That is one idea that I may 'steal' from your set up!!

Nice job Roger. I just used a wood dowel rod I had lying around. That way I don't need to insulate the top. Also when the guys did the insulation they left behind a whole box of those joist wires. They work great for hanging the pieces from.

Troy, what you do clearly works. The only thing I would not like about it however is the fact that you gotta stretch your black cable over across the water to the piece you are cleaning and it stays there while the cleaning is going on. In Rogers setup its back outside and not over the barrell. Just different things. I'm sure some others will have more.

I have a few different sizes of the eye bolts that I've spread out the eye part and they attach with a wing nut so I can move them around and have more than one hanging at a time.

have more than one hanging at a time.

Has anyone ever had a problem with corrosion when pieces were hanging side-by-side?

I didn't take pictures and document it but I had rust/corrosion form on one one skillet when hanging very close to another.  I believe when pieces are placed in parallel there can be a small voltage difference between them resulting in current flow between them.

It has been awhile since I've cleaned multiple pieces at one time, but I don't recall seeing a problem like you have seen Gary.  Next time I clean, I'll have to look more closely.

Two questions, Roger.  Where did you get that foam stuff and where did you get that metal piece with holes in it?  I want to get mine setup!

I think the insulation is the insulation that one uses on hot water pipes and is available in the plumbing sections at Home Depot and the like for a couple bucks for 6-8 feet.  Comes in various diamters.  What diameter is yours Roger?

The holey angle iron is at places like Home Depot, Lowes, Menards and other building supply houses.  It will be with their steel and aluminum bar and sheet metal stock, usually somewhere around the screws, fasteners and chains.

Perry,
You really won't like what I say next then. I connect the negative lead directly to the piece I'me cleaning and dunk it too. It just cleans the lead too. Granted can't do multiples.
