Nickel + Chrome Plated Wagners ?
« on: November 11, 2008, 09:31:37 PM »
Need any info I can get about these 2 pans. Also, can these be cleaned in my electro tank without hurting the plating? If not, what is the best way? These where a couple that I picked up at my last auction. This is a shot of the chrome plated # 9. If you need other pics, let me know.

It has been said that if the plating is in good shape the electro won't hurt them, if there are wear areas missing plating then it would probably loosen/remove the plating.  But why take the chance, use a lye bath or oven cleaner/plastic bag.  Regardless of plating condition, all of my plated ones are cleaned in lye.  Maybe I am over cautious but didn't buy them to end up with black iron.

I'm with Tom.  I always clean plated iron in the lye bath (never the electro) regardless of the condition of the plating for the same reason.  Others may differ, tho.

That number nine is nickel. Its the very old "WAGNER" and was made before chrome ever came out. The second piece, I wouldn't swear to it, but it looks like nickel to me too.

Hey Perry, The sides of the pan are very smooth and shiney. Like chrome. Can't get a clear pic to show you but I'll try again. This is the first pan in this thread. They could both be nickel, it's just that one is machined or cast smooth.

Charles, it looks like nickel to me, and the date is all wrong for chrome. Thats a nice old Wagner. Those are some of my favorite Wagner skillets, with that stick lettering.

I could be dead wrong on this and someone please correct me if I am, but didn't I read somewhere that Wagner only nickel plated and didn't chrome plate anything?

Nickel it is then. It's the oven cleaner and bag for these 2 then. Unfortunatley they both have a slight wobble. I hate it when that happen

Sandy, I was trying to think of a specific chrome piece that Wagner made, but could not bring one to mind. Wagner did use chrome plating but much later, 1940's and 50's. Both these pieces are nickel I would say. In the RB on page 6, lower right hand corner it lists Wagner finishes and one of them is chrome. But as you can see, based on what we know, in my opinion, it is safe to say that Wagner did not make any chrome items for its first 60 or so years of operation.
