Double gate mark oval pot

Found this one today also. S P & CO 3 G mark the bottom. I have a couple othe pieces from them. Stuart Peterson & Company. The one thing that is a little strange is the inside of the piece. It looks like it's lined with white porcelain. Not sure though. Any opinions on this? Here's a couple pics.

It looks like the three means 3 gallon. I'd say it probably is porcelain lined and it also looks like it has been painted.

How can I clean this thing with out hurting the porcelain? I'm affraid the electro might take it off or at least loosen it. Any suggestions? Also, How do I whiten the porcelain? If I should whiten it. I think you're right about the paint Perry. I hate paint on iron >:(

For cleaning the porcelain, you might try polident tablets.

Actually, there is no reason that you can't stick the whole thing in a lye bath. Now, as the porcelain is kinda worn you might want to keep an eye on it. If the pot will only be for display, you can use wax on the interior to give it a bit of shine.

I heard here that lye would/could damage porcelain so i havent dunked mine in the lye.  Thats definately a factory finish on the inside.  Is there a non-hazardous paint remover that could be used first?

Well, I find that interesting.

Let's see... what's your oven lined with? And, what do many people use to clean their ovens?

Not being snarky... I swear!

And, as I said.. in this case the porcelain surface IS damaged. So, I would use lye with caution. Don't put it in for hours! But, if that seems too iffy, I would try the polident.

I'm sure there have been some improvements in the process since the 1860s when this was made but back then they were experimenting with a lot of different porcelain processes weren't they?  And will the lye remove the paint?  I had no luck removing paint off of one piece a while ago and figured I'd set it aside until i have the electro set up.  :-/

You might have read it here, Jeff... not doubting that at all.

There could be differences in the final result of porcelain that age. That I can't know.

I've never been a big lye user but, I've been told that it can remove paint. I dunno... I DO know that electro will strip paint off easy-peasy. Well, say that... I've had pieces that were painted on top of carbon and gunk and then it seems that the pieces were HEATED! ACK! That combo turns into something that is almost electro-proof!

Chuck... as long as there are no chips in the porcelain, I'd put it in the electro. I've cleaned a few pieces this way, pieces that even had chips. I just inspected the piece and made sure that the remaining coating isn't flaking anywhere. I've never lost any porcelain this way.

I've had success with bleach and water. Haven't found anything it won't whiten.

The porcelain is in great shape. The only concern I have is along the very top edge. I'm affraid that the electro may get under it there and lift it. I could try to submerge it to that point but it could be a balancing act to keep it from flowing into the pot. I have a cast iron ingot that could be used to counteract the bouyany of the pot and hold it down to that point. Don't ask me why I have an ingot.  ;D It was in the bottom of a box lot. I can display it with my collection as a reminder of where the pieces came from. Well, they actually came from iron ore but at some point they were all ingots. Any, back to the point. I'll have to experiment carefully. I don't want to mess this one up. As far as the lye.... there is no gunk on the piece so I don't think it will work. JMHO.

Lye will remove the paint.   I've had pieces that had paint on them, both a skillet and some of my trivets....pulls it right off....

Pot is soaking full of hot bleach water right now. I was trying Soft Scrb With Bleach. To much like work so it's soaking with clorax and water.

Chuck, I've made a paste of baking soda and bleach to clean some porcelin lined pots that I have. I just apply it and let it sit for awhile then do a light scrub with hot water.
Lye shouldn't bother it as mentioned above, we have all used it on our porcelin thrones sometime in the past. Jim

I've not had lye hurt porcelain, but putting the piece in a vinegar solution for 24 hours did ruin the coating.  Softened and pitted it.  I'm sure there are different "porcelains" so I don't know if it affects all, but I don't worry about lye but will not put any piece in vinegar.

I agree with no vinegar on porcelain. Not to soak anyway... it can and will etch the surface at the very least.
