Hello Jeff. I never knew that there was such a thing, or site as you say. I don't know what to make of it all actually. But I do like the name of it, the 'wayback machine'. These pictures would be from 02 or 03.

Hi all,

A question if I may.  Is important to use stainless steel barrels? I can get lots of unlined regular carbon steel barrels for dirt cheap. Would they be OK?

Use can use carbon steel.  It will work just fine.  You might just want to clean it off every now and then while you're using it.  That will help it work better.

Ok so where does one get one of these?  And will it fit a 14 skillet?

Neil, if you are talking about the barrels, yes they are nice, but me, I think everybody makes too much of them, and I sold them all except two that I kept for myself, that I do not use for electro. I just use a plastic barrel with sheets of SS, two sheets, and hang the piece to be cleaned in between the sheets, and yes, the system like I am talking about, which is roughly the same size diameter of the SS barrels will VERY EASILY take a number 14 skillet. In fact I have cleaned number 16 skillets in it and also a number 20 skillet, so no problem.

Thats a new one on me to Perry...and I thought I read everything on the forum at one time or another. But the way I forget...I read it one night and a week later I read it again and its like the first time I ever seen it.

Perry, would you believe my barrel is still going strong after all these years.  When was it, 2005?

I know this thread has been inactive for a few years, but where did you get those barrels from and what was the cost?

I have my own electro setup and after a few pieces, have to replace it, the anode corroded to unusable.

Hello Mathew and welcome to the WAGS forum.  Glad you found us.  This really isn't an inactive thread that hasn't been used for years.  You'll notice that Perry posted to it in May of 2011.  It probably gets looked at more times that it gets posted to.  I refer this thread to folks wanting information on setting up an electrolysis system.  To answer your question,  Perry worked for an old time butcher for many many years and when the butcher shop closed down, Perry bought a lot of the contents including these stainless steel barrels (I don't know how many).  These were originally used for a lot of things that I'm sure Perry could tell you about.  He sold a lot of them to WAGS members and to the best of my knowledge there are no more left for sale.

Once again, Welcome to the forum and if you need more help in setting up your system, just ask questions and we'll see what we can do to help.

After I posted I noticed there were many more pages that I hadn't read.

I'm looking for an anode setup that can withstand more than a few pieces cleaned before I have to replace it.

My first attempt was with scrap electrical conduit screwed together in a grid, but after the 2nd piece, I had to replace it.  Now I have 2 pieces of Uni-strut with 12 pieces of all-thread secured with nuts and washers in a rubbermaid type tub.  I expect that this will not last that long, but longer than the original setup.

I've seen some ingenious setups, but don't have access to the materials used.

The next version will involve angle-iron or square tube and some welding.

Matthew.......It sounds like you have a good working knowledge of some basic building materials used in the construction field.....electrical conduit, Uni-strut, all-thread, angle-iron, square tubing, welding, etc., etc.  You should be able to come up with something that will work for you.  Many folks start out with the rubbermaid tubs or plastic buckets and eventually end up with a barrel of some sort.  They seem easier to put together and you can hang the iron fully submerged.  Either the stainless steel barrel or the plastic barrel with a stainless steel sheet wraped around the inside seems to be where most wind up.  You can use ferrous iron or plates or sheets instead of stainless steel, but they will wear out faster.  The thicker your material the longer it will last.  If you read through this whole thread you will find many ideas that you might be able to adapt to your skills and needs.  I'll post another link to a thread we have been discussing in the cleaning section.  If you read through that thread, you will find this thread, as well as some more that should help you out.  Click on all of them and see what you think.  Show us some pictures of what you are working with and we can offer more solutions.  If you want to continue this discussion in this new link instead of here, feel free to jump in or you can start your own thread in the cleaning section.....you might get more responses than here in this "sticky" thread.

Hello Matt. I use two pieces of SS in my electro. Others have a very  similar setup. You say some pieces you don't have access to. I don't understand why you would not have access to these materials, but, if you can get some SS, thats your best bet. These barrels are nice, and I sold them, but I don't use them. I use what I am telling you about here. Good luck.  :)

I thought I'd park this post on this thread.  Too lazy to look for other barrel threads.. ::)

Thought I'd show a plastic tub I got at a local flea market.  It appears to be made of PVC like a the 55 gal drum I use for electro, and more rigid of course than Rubbermaid stuff for lye.  Some guy was selling them for $6 apiece and they include a lid which is unusual for other tubs or barrels I see at flea markets.  Its 21" in diameter x 19" deep. I dont really need one right now, but going to keep this one for future use, maybe a Lye tank or smaller electro....I just couldnt refuse a bargain.

Most people who were buying them will use them for tomato plants. :D

Thanks for posting that Jerry. I ran across a place the other day, and they were selling 55 gallon plastic barrels and 30 gallon plastic barrels with lids. They make great electro setups.  ;)

Gary, from looking at your pictures (thanks) it seems that your barrel is hot. By that I mean it is charged. I have grandchildren and wouldn't want them around it when I had it working. Thanos again.I am posting this even though the thread is a few years old.

Hello Bob. Yes the barrel is 'hot'. The barrel itself is the donor piece. And it probably would be a good idea to not let your grandchildren play around it while the electro is running.

And yes, this thread is a few years old, but the information is timely, accurate and up to date, and you can still post on it, as you can see, and others have posted on it recently also.

Good luck Bob. Hope this information helps.  :)

CPR.....they sell drums of all sizes and shapes at the flea markets around here, both plastic and metal.   One man says he gets his drums from a Candy factory, and looking at the labels on them I believe it.  All food ingredients, and some held Honey.  He has a long flat bed trailer he pulls behind his PU truck and I asked how he gets the honey out and other sweet liquids shipped in the barrels.  He said its easy, I just leave them set out at my house and the bees clean them out...lol

He has been trying for years to get me a SS barrel, but said they are rare.  I wouldnt buy one today even if I had the chance.  The $5 plastic one I got does just fine.  Thats what he gets for 55 gal plastic. I never asked about the smaller ones.

Hello Jerry. I have two SS 55 gallon barrels, of the ones I got from the meat market, I kept two for myself. My point is that I could set myself up an electro using a SS barrel. But I don't want to do so because the plastic cut down 55 gallon plastic barrel that I use for my electro works wonderful, so I don't need a SS barrel, I'd rather do what I am doing. And like I said, it works great. And the plastic barrels are easy to come by, you just gotta look in the right place.  ;)

Stainless steel barrels are sky high now for the steel.  I was talking to a man Saturday who had an old Milk tanker trailer, it held about 6-7000 gallon he said, but wasnt road worthy and just junk.  He sold it to a a junk dealer and I dont remeber now how much he got for just the stainless, plus the other iron in the frame and all......He laughed and said he had tried to sell the trailer for $500 and it never sold...... :D
