What type of lyeand where do you get it
« on: November 25, 2013, 08:01:01 PM »
Well, went to a pharmacist friend and lye is blacklisted in Ontario for sure, apparently it is used in illegal drug labs.  I do live on the Canada/USA border and can get into northern Michigan. What are you all using for your lye baths and where do you get it
Thanks

Randy, I moved your post here to the Cleaning and Restoration Board.
Look at the top of the Board, the Sticky titled- Where to Buy Lye and Other Supplies – Rebuild

http://www.griswoldandwagner.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1383613590

I use a (1) 15 gallon and (1) 20 gallon Rubbermaid Roughneck, and a few other containers from time to time...  :)

Drain cleaner works fine if you are only going to buy a pound or so. Hardware store

Not all drain cleaners are 100% Sodium Hydroxide.

The only two "drain cleaners" that we have found to be 100% are listed above in the link I gave to Randy... Roebic and Rooto....

Any other drain cleaner could be bad news, as many contain suphuric or hydrochloric acids..........

Yes, there is a Tractor supply in Northern Michigan that has the Roebic.. Just a quick question from the experts. What method do you find more effective, lye bath or electrolysis
From your experiences... :-/

Both.
I use lye to degunk and clean.
Electrolysis to remove rust.

Keeps the cost of maintaining and operating the electro down. :)
