Tea kettle cleaning/seasoning
« on: February 03, 2014, 10:41:25 PM »
Sooo my dads been vigorously cleaning up his tea kettles. And question is what ways to refinish it. Season the outside or paint? What about the inside???

Thanks

Well, that all depends on........

What is the finish on the outside?  galvanized, plated, black iron.....

What is the condition of the inside? <yikes, I am afraid to even ask this question....>

PS... I never paint teakettles... but I will be stripping paint from one.. soon.

Oh... what kind/style/brand of teakettles are we talking about?  :)

Outside is black iron and inside will be cleaned up once its electrode and vinegar bath. Lol.

I think they're just old gated ones. Unmarked. That hold water and tea. Haha. If there isn't any holes once its cleaned haha

Clean and derust as with any other CI then.

Challenge is interior... electro will not remove calcification inside, even with reverse electrolysis..
Usually requires boiling vinegar in the tea kettle if calcification is severe.
That is when you really find out if there are holes........ :D

If not intending to use them, oil with food grade mineral oil inside and out.

If intending to use, I would do convential seasoning on exterior to seal and prevent rusting....
