Restoration of The 1930 Dutch Oven Store Display
« on: January 30, 2014, 12:17:28 PM »
I am in the process of restoring the 1930 5 stack Griswold Dutch Oven store display that I would like to get some detailed information on. I would like to restore it to it's original condition. Can you tell me if the entire top piece is nickle plated or just the face of the image that say's griswold? I see in the photo that is in the blue book that I have that the small cast iron pieces that hold the brackets that the pot sit on are not painted. Were they painted in the original version of this item. Any help on the details of the paint and plating on this wonderful piece would be very much appreciated.

Thanks for your assistance in this matter.

I don't have the displat rack with me at the time. It is with the person that is doing the restoration. I will try to get him to send me some photos and I will post them. I am looking for somepne that is familiar with this display rack so they can tell me how it was painted and what parts were nickle plated so I can have it restored to it's original condition.

Thanks

Neal

Neal,

There are several folks in WAGS that may be able to help you out.  You may want to start with David Smith.  He can probably tell you about the display stand in the Blue Book.  His web site is www.panman.com.

Make sure the top piece really is nickel plated.  I believe Griswold was also using chrome plating at the time that stand was made.

Good luck with your restoration.

Jeff

I am posting 2 pics of the Dutch Oven store display that I am restoring. Any help in determining just what was nickle plated and what was painted would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Neal

Did you ever get a reply from David Smith?

He shows a picture in the Blue Book of this rack and it looks like the cast parts at the top are plated.  It is hard to tell from the picture, but the plating looks like it might be chromium, not nickel.  The legs and triangular brace at the bottom are painted red.  I cannot say what the finish is on the 5 sets of steel pieces that support the Dutch ovens.
