Wagner #9 cast iron waffle maker with base
« on: July 02, 2010, 03:13:37 PM »
I just bought a Wagner #9 cast iron waffle maker with base, that appeared to be in good condition, for $64.95 plus shipping.

I was wondering if that was a good price or not, although most of the Wagner and Griswold waffle makers with a base are going for a lot more than that.

It appeared to be in good condition, the handles had a little cosmetic damage, but that doesn't affect the use.

I couldn't download the images but it's item number 270601137286 on ebay.

I don't think you got a real bargain, but its a nice old waffle iron, its very early Wagner, and the nine is not that common, so you didn't do too bad, but you ain't got no braggin rights with the purchase.

How's that for an answer?  :)

Kathy,
If you use it and enjoy using it as I'm sure you will, it will be well worth the price...us collectors are kind of on the cheap side so you have to factor that into our replies

What I was really seeking was to make sure I didn't get ripped off... sounds like I didn't though.

I wouldn't consider 64.95 cheap necessarily, but it was the least expensive listed, and it looked like it was in fine condition.

I purchased a 1922 Griswold #9 and a 1910 Wagner #9 both on seperate auctions.  I got both for $32 each with no shipping costs.  Both are in great shape, just needed some TLC.  After seasoning them each 3 times they work great for waffles!  Most of the WI I find go for $50+.  Good deals can be found.  I took me over a year to find one and I got both of these within 2 weeks of each other.

oh yeah, there are $20 waffle irons available, but none from a brand I trust.

I'm referring to Rome's model 1100, it has mixed reviews on Amazon.  I learned the hard way not to buy brands I don't know-- some of it isn't even real cast iron and says so in small print.

I can almost guarantee you that is made in china with the "best" iron available......NOT!!!!!    Your waffle iron is at least 50 years old and made of probably virgin iron.   There is none better to use today.   The only iron I would recommend that is made today is Lodge.    But I don't think they offer a waffle iron????

The price on these seem to run all over the place. Here's 2 on E-bay right now...

That second one you listed is who we know as "cheap chuck"   He marks every thing up ALLOT!!!!!   You can not go by what someone has for sale.   New people keep posting cheap chuck auctions saying  "is it really worth this much"   And we keep saying no.   Every auction he has you can cut the price in half,  and even some in thirds and you will have the right price.   Thanks for asking,  as we have saved many new members here much money by not buying from him.

Thanks Will. I picked up a nice #8 Griswold waffle iron last week on E-bay for $34.00. It's not perfect, but I bought it to make waffles in! I went fishing tonight with my son, and we had waffles when we got home. They were great! Learning curve on an old waffle iron is a little steep (my first try caught the stove on fire and they were stuck pretty good!) but well worth the effort to learn how to properly use.

Good price,  and no better iron around today than that iron.

Enjoy.

Will,
After reading your comment about Cheap Chuck you have confirmed my suspicions about that seller.  After seeing some of his listings I have mostly thought to myself, "Is this guy out of his mind?"

BTW, I now also understand the tongue in cheek references to Chuck Rogers that some forum members have used by calling him Cheap Chuck.  At least his iron is worth what it brings based on condition, seasoning, etc.

Kyle we are just kidding with Chuck.  I've never bought a piece from him, but I've never heard anyone who has say anything but positive statements.  His final sale prices and feedback speak for themselves.

Roger,
My thoughts exactly.  From the few quips I have read here and there, he seems to take the ribbing in stride.  Stand up guy for sure.

Thank you guys. I learned all I know about cleaning, and seasoning right here. Tweaked it a bit, but would have been lost without this site.

I remember when Jeff Seago sent me an item, and changed the name to "Cheap Chuck" and then my address.  ;D I got a laugh out of that one. I'll have to send him an item addressed to "JIP JEFF"  ;D  Around here, a cheat is known as a "JIP".
