OK.. You guy's what's the most you've ever paid
« on: September 11, 2002, 07:08:59 PM »
We all love a great deal but once in a while we go overboard on a purchase. Have you ever paid
too much for a piece of our beloved iron? Or what was the best deal you ever got? Mine was a Griswold pan display rack at a hardware store going out of business $5.00  Brian Vick

a #6 wood handle griddle with the large TM, in mint (err excellent condition) for $26 and it was on EBAY!  The ad said it was chipped and pitted.  The pix was bad, so no one bid.  It's barely been used and the original handle is in perfect shape.

I don't like to admit my overpayments :-X but love to talk about the deals! Couple of months ago got a G.F. Filley muffin pan for $6 on Ebay! It was a Buy it Now deal and the seller couldn't real the name and called it a TF GILLET pan in the description. It was just a #5 but I like deals like that.

OK I'll break the ice on paying TOO much!

When I first started to collect I had the BLUE book (and Ebay didn't exist) but did not read it carefully.  I was in a shop and saw a #665 breakfast skillet and it was only $80.  WOW, this was way under book value and I liked the skillet.  Heck, it came with magnet eggs and bacon! :P

Well, like I said I didn't know much about iron and the importance of quality.  This thing looks like it was shot with a shotgun on both sides.  Very heavy, HEAVY pitting that was very evident.  So I have a 665 that is probably worth about the cost of those plastic eggs and bacon, but I threw them away, so I have a DOUBLE loss!!

Well, I just bought a #9 block epu nickel plated slick skillet, pn 710 with the low domed lid for $52.93 with fedex which is my all time high priced Griswold purchase , but before that the most I ever paid was $18 for a button logo high domed #8 skillet lid.

Knowing nothing, I sold the lid almost immediately for $36.  I could have done better, surely.  The panhandler is offering the identical lid for $100 or $125,  best I can recall.

BTW, hello everyone.  I'm a newbie to cast iron and am a small time flea market dealer, mostly of good no-name cast cookware which I strip and restore.

All I can say is what I've said for years.....No matter what you collect, you will have some items in your collection you paid too much for, and some you got at a bargain!......so if you like something, and it fits in your collection, get  IT!    :D :D :D

The most I ever paid was 126.00 for a #10 dutch oven with trivet and the least was 1.25 for a wagner #6 golfball gem pan and then again I got a #9 golfball for 16.56  ;D

About 10 years ago I bought a number 10 griswold large block with heat ring and I gave 85.00 for it. That was a lot of money for one of those, then and now. I also bought (from the same guy) a number 8 griswold dutch oven chrome (with trivet) for 85.00. Again, that was high then and now. I am damn glad that he did not have anymore cast iron that I liked on that day. This old boy is still around. The last time I saw him he tried to sell me a number 8 indian head wapak for 300.00 and he told me they were 500.00 in the book. I have bought a lot of pieces since. Most from ebay and a lot elsewhere as well. I have given a lot of money for some pieces but I remember these two in particular. I like Jerrys reasoning by the way. According to what you have said so far on here about how much is the most you have spent on a piece of cast iron, it makes me ashamed to say what I have spent. On one hand you might think I was bragging and on the other hand you might think I should be locked up for being insane and stupid.

Ok, I'm gonna fess up....It's like driving Volkswagons...I like it but I'm ashamed of it....I paid 310 dollars for a griswold comercial electric waffle maker with two waffle units....fell in love...it works...kinda...out bid some other idiots....I bet the seller is still laughing...but it's cute and neat and sits in my front room....There I did it!

I've done it too! $90 for a small t/m gris chicken fryer with cover. It was one of those auction deals were I was not going to be out bid on another piece of c.i. And then turn around the next weekend and get a $100 skillet for $30. All in all I'm not doing to bad.

Would you be interested in a cracked #10 Griswold Dutch Oven with trivet?  I'd sell it to you for $130, and ship it for free!  [smiley=biglaugh.gif] [smiley=biglaugh.gif] [smiley=biglaugh.gif] [smiley=biglaugh.gif] [smiley=biglaugh.gif] [smiley=biglaugh.gif]

Bought a 280 wheat pan for $30 and like John says, I have too many bad ones to mention. I can tell you that so far no one has even came close to matching me on an overpay. Like someone on here said everything has a tuition.

Best deals?  No.2 wood handled skillet in very good condition plus a No.8 handle griddle for $10 in 1986.  Also, several years later a 50 heart star for $25.

I'm like people here who go to Casinos. They only want to mention the times they won...    Lord only knows how many I have paid too much on   ;D ;D ;D   I have several pieces like that but I dont regret it now that I have them.
As for bargains, #4 Wapak Indian Head for $75.00 comes to mind, and the seller was tickled I didnt try to beat him down.

Also a #280 Griswold Corn Pan for $35 BIN on Ebay, buttttttt....we all know how that turned out.....  :D :D :D

Most of you are missing the isssue! It ain't how good a deal you got it's the worse deal you made...the most expensive at least and it may not have been a bad deal...but you are a little ashamed at how much you paid.. All this stuff about the best deal sounds like the inveterate race track devotees who never lost money  or the cowboy who says he's never been bucked off..Come on you guys pull it out from under the bed and give it some daylight...

I basically answered these questions but most of the overpays I made were before I got  books a long time ago and cant remember what I gave for some things then.  But I can assure you, I gave too much on some as compared to todays prices....particularily before I found Ebay.....especially on my dog banks and pups.  Only one that comes to mind is my first Hubley Fido Pup bank that I found in a store in Indiana. Paid $130 for it and have seen plenty since for lots less, but as I mentioned, I havent regretted it.  I have more than one now and my average aint bad....
