Thought maybe someone might find this site interesting.  It has some information about Porcelain Enamel and cast iron.

That is interesting Jerry.  I'd love to get a tour of the plant.

Does anyone know who made the first porcelain coated iron cookware and when?
Ans:  Jacob Vollrath in 1874 according to "The Housewares Story" book I have.    It wasn't until the 1920's that Griswold got into porcelainizing some of their cookware.

Was all the early Griswold porcelain enamel coated skillets and lids only coated on the outside?....unlike the later stuff that was coated inside and out?

All I can think of are the older pieces with porcelain on the outsides only.  Porcelain on the inside of covers started in the 30's and porcelain all over in the 50's(?).

Steve,
The blue porcelain set I have is a large block smooth bottom skillet with porcelain only on the outside.  The lid is a low dome #468 with blue porcelain only on the outside.

I shoud have qualified this statement to mean the "Clean-Easy" porcelain on the inside of dutch oven and some skillet covers.  The outsides were still black iron (or plated?) on these pieces.
