Jerry, I was curious about that too, so I emailed Mr. Haussler...... here are the emails and his answer.
Mr. Haussler,
I have been recently reading questions posted on the GCICA message
board and a question was asked about a #10, 948 Griswold muffin pan.
He was asked what letter was under the 948 to determine which variation
the pan was. My question is can you tell the variation by the letter under the #948? This man has asked about a 948 with no letter under it. Is that called
another variation? I'm trying to learn and any help would be appreciated.....thank you, Shearylon

Shearylon,
It is my opinion that the letter under the 948 (Pattern Number) refers to a different mold. I did not consider the different letters to be different variations. There are many of them, particularly with the #10 pans for both the 948 and 949 pattern numbers as well as other pans. This starts to get to a level I detail that I did not want to pursue. It was the opinion of the many advanced collectors that I talked with that this was too fine of level of detail to consider. It is fine if someone wants to collect the pans with the different letters. However, I surely would not pay any extra to get a certain letter. I hope this helps a little bit. Thanks for asking.
