#14 skillet
« on: August 26, 2004, 04:32:03 PM »
Just purchased a # 14 skillet, I can find no info in any of my books, can anyone help me with this one?
Top of handle has a #14.
The bottom has "Cast Iron Skillet"
under that a "14", under that the Griswold logo (block)
under logo a letter" A"
under the A it has "15 1/4 Inch"
then another "A"
It also has a heat ring.
Pour spouts on each side and has a lip for a lid.

Will be glad when my other books arrive.
Thanks,
Elaine

Elaine, You have a skillet made at the Wagner foundry in Sidney Ohio after Wagner or the Wagner parent company bought the rights to the Griswold name and trademark. While these are good users, they are not treated as "real" (AKA ERIE made) Griswold pieces by the collecting community. The skillets marked with their size in inches are non-ERIE pieces and made after Griswold went out of business in Erie, Pa. in 1957.

Thankyou Harry and Greg.
Let me ask another goofy question.
What would a reasonable price be for one of these big 'ole things?

Although it is not considered a collectible by most, as a user skillet I would say it is worth between 35.00 and 45.00.

Perry,
No offense but any #14 would be worth somewhere just north of that.  Even the Lodge US #14's bring more than $45. as users IMO.

It is difficult to give an accurate price on a piece that is not a collectible, as the value is then based on how many there are and more importantly, how many folks want the item.  It would be worth more than a new #14 skillet, since it is older than that, but then again it is a user item, so who knows.

All I can say it is worth more than $1 and less than $200.

I think these Wagner made Griswold 14 skillets sell for over $100 on ebay and I would say they would be worth a minimum of $75 to many people.  But then you get the people/collectors who are not interested in post-ERIE Griswold and would not pay much except if they could make an easy profit on selling it.  These Wagner 14's are nice quality pans however, at least the ones with the Griswold TM.

I had one and priced it at $100 at a flea market couple months ago, sold it for $75. I got it at auction on choice of any cast iron pieces $20. I took the #14 and several other pieces. I heard alot of moans and groans as I was making my stack of iron.

Troy, certainly no offense taken. I like to hear everybodys opinions. Thats just mine. But, as a second thought my price would probably be more for a 12, like the one she described.
