Deep Griswold Skillet?
« on: November 02, 2004, 09:28:39 PM »
I've befriended a mate in the UK...interesting to compare notes with him on what goes on over there as opposed to here...

He's looking for a deep skillet, like the Wagner 1401 3 1/2 inches deep 12 inches wide.  I've looked thru the Blue Book and missed it, but what would the similiar Griswold be?  He found a deep La Crueset for 97 quid!!! about $195 dollars US!!!  I told him we could find something alot better for alot less...Thanks in advance...

Baggsy,
The 1401 Wagner is a double skillet (red book p.29).  I think Griswold's No.90 double skillet would be comparable to it.  If your friend only wants the bottom, bottoms are sometimes on ebay without the top.  The Griswold No.90 is a very nicely cast pan and comes in nickel or black iron.  The early Griswold No.9 deep skillets (p/n 733) measure just shy of 12" dia not including the lips and are 3-1/4" deep.  No covers made for these early Griswolds and they flare out more than the later 777, 778, etc. pans for which covers are available.  The No.90 has the opposite side handle for easy lifting, too.  Should be able to get one and have it shipped to him for less than that LeCrueset.  The earlier Wagner deep skillets (1088, 1089, etc. with double pouring lips and flared out) are very nice pans and have covers (Skillet Roaster) for them.  Still should be less that Mr. Crueset if you can find one.  Not common.

Steve, I'm seeing a couple Wagner 1088's out on e-bay, but no pouring lips and not flared out.  Is this a newer 1088 version?

,
The 1088 and 1089 w/ pouring lips are older versions. The 1088 W/O the pouring lips were made right up till Wagner went out of business They were available with the glass lids and you could still getem with the cast lids in the 90s The 1088 and 89s are on e-bay semi regular and go cheap in my opinion

Yes, those 1088's are the much more common, newer style c.1940's-50's pan.

P. 28 red book shows several versions of the early 1088 deep skillet with lips and quite flared out compared with the later 1088 with pretty vertical sides and no lips.  The early style goes way back into the non-catalog number days but is the same pan.  That's the one I would look for or a Griswold deep (732,33,34 are nicer than the 777,78,79 pans I think) or a No.90 Griswold bottom or complete set.  Of course you don't get covers to fit the 732 series or a standard cover for the No.90 but, I think, a standard cover will fit the No.80 deep Griswold skillet set as its sides do not flare out so much.

In addition to the double skillet as Steve mentioned, the "chicken pan" is just a deep skillet.
Hold still rabbit, so I can cook you.

I picked up a WW 1089 with matching lid on e-bay a few months ago for $60 delivered. Keep an eye open as you can probably pick up one of these gems on e-bay and deliver it to the UK for half of the Le C. costs.

It appears we have found a 777 deep with lid for a WHOLE lot less than the LaCrueset.  It's in a Ebay-UK listing and while only the last few minutes are worth watching, it hasn't attracted alot of attention yet.  For myself, I'm going to watch for the 1088/1089 older style...thanks for the tip guys!  I've got the bottom of a 1041 and it literally lives on top of my stove.  I think it's major selling point is that it doesn't spatter anything onto the stove when you fry in it!  Just a great user...
