gated dutch oven marked MT
« on: February 01, 2005, 11:51:38 PM »
This dutch oven has a raised MT and number 8 with a gate mark, has anyone seen one like it before?

The lid has a really cool basting pattern.

Maybe but not sure and don't know the maker.  There was a photo of that basting pattern on ebay or here a while ago.  Pretty interesting.

I obviously haven't cleaned it yet, but it is very well cast.  This is the first dutch oven I've seen with a gate mark.  I'm sure there are others.

Ebay purchase, they said the gate mark was a repair.   I took a chance on it because I was going to make it a user.   I didn't know the lid looked like that until I got it.

We've discussed that lid on here before and the ID was never determined.

Oh and I don't think it had a gate. Seems both pieces should if they go together.

So you don't think this lid goes with this DO, Troy?

I really don't know. I know I have seen that lid before. I don't remember it being with a gated oven. THe could be a match. I will see if I can dig something up in my notes. I'm swamped though. Gee I'm starting to sound like Greg. Seems my time here is in drive bys.

I hadn't considered that.  I guess I too often fall into the trap of believing what I see.  The seasoning matches and it fits tighltly, therefore it must be a an original pair, not.  Very possible it could be a marriage.  Oh well, I'll still make it a user.  It didn't cost much, and if nothing else, the lid looks cool.

Roger,
I don't know if they go together or not. I got to dig for notes and "might" be able to give you a comparison. They do look like they go together. Where is the gate on the lid? I assume it is on the side. If so why would the oven be on the bottom?

Oh man, I just don't know. I couldn't find the thread that originally talked about this and I think it was a link to e-bay so the pictures wouldn't have been there any way.

I know I saw some discussion on this before and sat down for some quality time with back issues of KNC. -Vol 7 No 6 from 1998 has a letter in the melting pot with pictures of this lid. Only the lid though so I can't tell you about the bottom.

I don't know if these two go together. I do remember seeing them before and while I didn't keep the pictures I did look at them pretty hard trying to figure out who made them. We never did but I really don't recall it having a gate mark. In fact I'm pretty sure it didn't but that is only my memory and it sometimes slips. Who's to say that one wasn't a marriage and yours isn't.

I wouldn't worry about it much and if the lid fits well clean it up and use it. Regardless you don't see to many of these and it's cool just the same.

Roger, I have seen a do like this, only the cover has a gate on the inside and no basting design. The owner can trace it back in his family to about 1904 near St Louis area. I'm sill trying to talk him out of it! ;D          JR

I associate that basting pattern with the Ozark/Cresent foundry out of St. Louis, MO.  A friend as a DO with that pattern on the lid, with the foundry info on the pot, if I recall correctly.

I'm going to clean this tomorrow, so I can get a better look without all the seasoning/crud on it.  Thanks for all the information.

Troy,
I will check with the individual and post a reply as soon as I get an answer.

Could that pot and cover, above, be a marriage?  I have seen a small number of Crescent do's but don't remember that cover.  Possibly a later, basting cover?  Just don't know.
