What Hinged Lid?
« on: November 20, 2005, 10:03:55 PM »
A friend had what we thought was a double skillet, but after cleaning years of crud, we find it's a #8 chicken fryer. Nothing old or valuable, but a useable piece that her father gave her. Does any one have an idea, or photo of what the hinged top would look like. She's interested in completing the skillet. The bottom says, "10 1/2 INCH CHICKEN FRYER  MADE IN USA   nothing else. Thanks.

So you believe that this the bottom of a double skillet, instead of just a hinged lid? I was thinking it would look more like the skillets on top of page 33 in the blue book with the hinged lids.

I don't think its a double skillet either. Rather it looks like a number 8 hinged skillet that needs a hinged lid.

Your chicken fryer looks like a later Wagner made pan c.1960's and would probably have a skillet type cover and not a double skillet top.  The cover might look like a Griswold sm. TM cover but marked only Made in USA on the inside.  Finding one could be hard.  You would be better off to buy a complete OLDER Griswold or other make with better quality than the later Wagner one.

Thanks for the info, now we have a starting point, made in USA on the inside of a hinged lid. Since her father gave it to her, she's going to want to try to find a lid for it. That is one thing unique with cast iron cookware, people do become attached to it, you don't find that attachment to aluminum pots and pans. I have yet to see someone hold up a pan and say this was my grandmother's aluminum pan.

I think you can get a dutch oven #8 lid that will fit that skillet. If you have to have one look for a newer one from wagner on E-bay
