Santa Mold
« on: December 19, 2005, 10:19:13 AM »
Hi,
Jeff and I were playing hookie yesterday from work and went antiqueing. We found a santa mold with a very small mfg. flaw around the same area as the one shown in the reproduction/original page on the website.  Is it possible the flaw was ground down? The piece is very smooth and the rest of it looks to be a good match to the original. Please note I have never seen a original but have discovered quite a few repros.

Will,
The santa is at the gurnee antique mall. Have you seen it?

Thanks,
Sharon

I've seen real Santas without any of the flaws and ones with the flaws, so both exist.  Whether they have been ground down or not, I don't know, but the ones I've seen are all real and real smooth.

Real ones without the flaw in the bag is new to me. I am sure Greg is right. Good smooth casting and good and equally spaced lettering would be the best guides for me. And of course the tongue. I am always affraid of any grainy casting on any thing.

No haven't been there.  I thought Jenny and I have been,  but she said no we haven't.   Sounds like I have to go.   What was the price on the Santa?

Real and repro Santas are very easy to tell apart.  Forget all the mentioned differences EXCEPT for the writing on the handle.  Check our repro/fakes page and/or some books and try to remember what the typestyle looks like on the real ones vs the repro ones.  They are noticeably different.  ALL original Santas have the same print and ALL repros have the same but different and cruder print.  In the case of the print it's either one or the other; there are not ones that look like they could be real or be fake- it will be very clear to you once you remember what the two styles of writing look like.

Will,
We went today and bought it. Jeff is out buying a cake mix to try it out.  Can't wait to watch him bake this one. Kinda think of it I can't remember him ever baking a cake. Should be fun.

Thanks as always to the wonderful WAGS members for their help.

Will,
I know the antique mall does not advertise it but if you pay with cash and you ask they give you 10% off, so the price was 405.00

Will I'm cheap too, but there is something to be said for being able to pick it up and inspect it, and also not having to pay shipping.   Sharon, be sure and show us photos of your santa cake.

If you are referring to the mold I have to clean it off. If you are referring to the cake that will have to wait until jeff figures out how to glue all the pieces together. (I suggested frosting, he is not talking to me right now)

[smiley=hysterical.gif]  Boy just the sound of 10 degrees makes me feel cold.  It's in the 40's here.  Good luck with the cake. ;D

Sharon, assuming this mold works like the Lamb and Rabbit molds, there is no need to stick the pieces together.  You fill up the bottom of the mold with batter then put the top on.  As it bakes it rises and fills the mold.  You have a complete, one piece cake when you take it out.  I may have missunderstood the earlier comment about icing so apologies if this is redundant.

Hello all,

The problem was it came out of the mold in, let's just in a few pieces. I explained to jeff that I did not think oil and flour would stop it from sticking and maybe he should try pam as per the website.  (He has selective hearing) Two cans of frosting later it resembled something not of this planet. It didn't help he had the head on upside down.  Since that experiment he has gone thru several more cake mixes trying different things (except pam).  I have to admit it has been fun watching him. It's not to often he is perplexed. Here are the pictures of the mold. Hope it's a real griswold.

That's really pretty.

There's another baking release product that you should be able to find at the store.  Baker's Joy.  It is like Pam but has flour in it to help the release.   It's made for bundt cakes and other complex designs.  It really works well. It needs to be a pretty stout cake to hold togeter.  It's essentially a pound cake.  I know there is a scan or two of the lamb and maybe the santa recipes on the site if I can find them.  You can also put a small dowel or bamboo skewer in the cake batter if you want to give it a little more support.

Thanks Tom for the information. Pam worked like a charm but one of the cats got to it before I could get a picture. Will try again next week. I am also going to put a little flour in certain areas to see if it will come out a lighter brown when done to show off the
belt and welcome kiddies. Should be interesting.
