Anyone have a picture of a griswold ashtray label?
« on: January 15, 2006, 09:41:15 AM »
Bought a griswold ashtray yesturday 570a 00 and it has the original label inside.I know thet reproduced these and was wondering if the repos had labels.the label is yellow and says griswold cast iron ash tray and has a picture of an ashtray with a pack of matches in it and a cigarette. there is a piece that seems to be cut out on the bottom of the label was wondering if this was tohide something.I only paid $10 so i guess its not a big loss if fake.Thank you for any help.

Jerry: I don't recall ever seeing an ashtray with the label. I sure would like to see a picture if you have the equipment. I am not saying Griswold did not put labels in ashtrays, I am saying I don't know, I don't see why they wouldn't, they put them in almost everything else.

Never seen one before, but doesn't mean they weren't made either.  I'm sure others will chime in.

Jerry, Does your ashtray have the match holder?   All Griswolds do but the ones without the match holder were made in the Wagner foundry post-1957.  The Griswold ones should also be marked ERIE, PA.  I'm pretty sure you have an original whatever version it is.  I can't recall a repro or fake with a label other than one that says CHINA.

Why Harry, there sure are; the windproof ashtray (it looks like I am incorrect on that one as they are not marked with ERIE) and the cowbow hat ashtray (they are marked with ERIE, PA).  If there are any skillet type ashtrays marked ERIE without the matchholder I must have missed remembering them.  Can anyone tell me of any?  Photos or references?  Are any of the Griswold marked skillet ashtrays with the cigarette rests at the 4 and 8 o'clock position marked ERIE?  I didn't think so.
Thanks,
Steve

Sorry for my assumption which was that, since the windproof ashtray is so smiliar to the 72 deep patty bowl that it would also have been marked ERIE.  Better stick to my interests which do not include ashtrays.
I'm still curious if the ashtrays with the rests at 4 and 8 o'clock are marked ERIE.

Joe,
Did you happen to see the various sizes of the windproof ashtrays that were at the convention in TN last year?  I forgot who had them, but I did not realize there were so many sizes of these.  Hmm, it may not have been in TN, but in PA when I saw them at the WAGS convention, I know I saw them at a convention, but can't remember if itwas PA or TN or who had them (Foxx's perhaps).

Greg, I saw them. They were at the TN. convention. I only have the #32 and #33 plus a few of the regular ones.                                                  Steve, all of the ones without the matchbook holder that I have do not have ERIE on them.

Steve, I should have made it clear that I was referring to the skillet type ash trays. None of my skillet type ash trays without the match holder are marked Erie but I thought I had read on here that someone had seen them.
