Howdy! Tell me about this 3 legged Skillet!
« on: January 30, 2006, 10:14:48 PM »
Howdy, My wife, Carolyn, saw this skillet at an antique shop this last weekend and just had to get it for me!!! Who am I to deny her such great pleasure!!! So I let her get it! It's about 10" across the top, about
2 1/2 " deep. 3 legs and a gate mark on the bottom. the # 1- on the handle. I've heard some folks call this type of skillet a 'spider', but form my experience and research with Civil War cooking equipment, a spider was made of sheet metal and had slightly longer legs. If I'm mistaken, tell me true! I came with a lid, but is not a match, too small, but the lid does fit an old deep pot I bought years ago. Tell me what you can, otherwise, I'm just tickled pink to have it anyway!
Thanks
Phillip Allen

By the way, that's a #10 on the handle, not # 1.

Hi Phillip, these are called spider skillets by some folks.  The lid is definitely a mismatch.  The original lid would have the flange around the edge to hold coals on the lid.  Here is a photo of what it should look like.  However, these lids show up on ebay often and in antique stores as well.  The lids are marked 10 or 10 inch, but I would measure it to be sure it fits.    As far as age, it's hard to say.  These were made into the 20's and 30's even with the bottom gate mark.  Either way, it's a nice one that looks like it would clean up nice.  I wish my wife would by me cast iron, she just looks at me funny when I bring home another piece.  ;D
As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

Thanks, Roger!
I kind of  thought that was the the case, I have a slightly smaller Camp ducth oven with the gate marks on the underside of the lid and bottom of the oven. The lid does have the ridge to hold coals on top. It has the ears for a hinged bail (which I do have) instead of the long handle. I use it quite often for cobblers and cornbread for the wife and I!!! Just the right size for two!
Thanks again
