Griswold Step Stool.
« on: February 21, 2009, 11:26:41 PM »
Guess i need to look at every page in the BB. I had no idea that a step stool carried the Griswold name. It sold for $160.00 . I was the second bidder @ $150.00 .  :'( It was tough to let it go, but I had my eye on some other pieces.
It was a 2 step, step stool.

Has anyone figured out which company made those for Griswold?  Has to be a leader of that sort of thing at the time.  Is there any other info stamped into the underside of the stools?

I don't remember clearly but I thought it was Randall.  P. 214 BB.

Don't cry Chuck, unless your a GRISWOLD guy like me they ain't worth the price as far as I am concerned. That is unless you get it a a very good price and 150 is not. Then you can resell to guys like me for a nice profit. ;D They are very cheaply made the steps usually have a split in them where they attach to the side rails I wouldn't put my 240lbs on it. Don't know why they sell so high except that maybe people just tossed them away because they broke so easy and they are a scarce item.
No writing as to who made it.

I think the step stools were made by AMES.
EDIT TO ADD:

I should say I think some of the step stools, tables, etc. were made By Ames. I have a few pics of a utility table and box marked made by Griswold Mfg. Co Sidney Ohio and also marked AMES MAID. I've seen a large step stool with both markings on them. The small stools look a lot like the ones marked COSCO and there probably were multiple suppliers. I think the stools might have been outsourced rather than actually being made by Griswold.

Harry

EDIT # 2  Oops, just looked at Tom's reference in the BB and see that they were in fact not made by Griswold.

I thought at first that it would go for 15 or 20 the way the bidding was going, then 3 of us jumped in, and it went from there. You should have heard the crowd. "That much for a step stool". They didn't know what it was for sure. I got alot of questions about it afterwards. I think the wife would have had a few for me as well if I ended up with it.  ;D . It was in great shape. A little fine rust on the chrome was all. That would have cleaned up with some 0000 steel wool. Would have looked like new. Jeese was right, they were cheaply made. I was suprised at that.

This is what Steve Stephens said at one time, if I remember correctly. Now to start with, these were made after Griswold was merged into Wagner. Then along come the Randall Company, I don't know the timeline right off the top of my head, but, one of the subsidiaries of Randall was a tubing place, you know, where they bent tubing to make whatever, and so it was speculated that this subsidiary of Randall made these step stools, for Wagner, who sold them under the Griswold name. The Griswold name is on the rubber part of the steps.

And Chuck, I agree with Jesse, you didn't miss much. That guy that outbid you did you a favor. I have seen them, they are cheaply made, just as stated here. It was just another sales ploy to sell the griswold name, because if you needed a step stool, then you should have bought a good one. So they ain't much punkin.
