Unusual square griddle

This looks like it was meant to cook something so that the grease would drip down into the channel on the side. On the bottom it has two legs on one side, and is marled on the bottom with a raised #17 and on the bottom of the handle it reads "PAT. APPL'D FOR" Any ideas who made it?

Here's another picture of the bottom of the handle, so you can see it a little better. I thought it was unusual, and I like the unusual stuff.  :)
