iDENTIFY THIS PLEASE
« on: March 17, 2009, 06:41:29 PM »
This is to big for a toy? Small for a 3 leg cooking pot? A salesman sample? I don't know. Nice looking pot.
What I know, I keep forgetting.

Measures about the same size of this three legged pot I have. 4" tall and 5 7/8" wide.  Nice kettle. Maybe for a 19th century batchelor if he wanted soup.... ;D

Nicest part about yours Clark is the feet are still there. I see so many worn or cut but you just have to love those old 19th century pieces.

I don't know what it is ....but why is it not just a small pot from the period before stoves (circ 1840)

I always thought that pots with the legs and handle were made to hang or put on the coals of an open hearth, the way they cooked before stoves.  I would think the pots would have come in many sizes.  They probably stacked them when not in use.

I know that most collectors on this forum are looking for cast iron from around the 1900's but I think there are many pieces out there from years before this, especially when I see the bottom gate.

I say you have a really nice old pot and I hope I can find one like that some day.

Looks like a $300-$500 water drum to me, maybe a starter for the kids. ;)  Mike
