Chicken Fryer: Beehive Lid
« on: June 17, 2009, 03:33:10 PM »
I THINK I have a marriage here. The lid is well marked while the bottom is not. The fit is a little sloppy, but perhaps that is normal. And I really think that lid is older than the bottom. BUT! The bottom DOES have the heat ring..... I guess I am looking for opinions on whether they belong together and who made the top. THANKS!

Here are the markings on the lid. 258L is easy to see in the photo, but the 3 on the south half of the lid is much harder to see. L could be for "lid". What is the 3 for? Obviously this is meant to go on a pan with pour spouts. AND.... I assumed the size was an 8, but this lid is too small for a #8 Griswold and too big for a #7. The chicken pan itself measures 10 inches inside diameter.

That lid is usually never marked,  except for numbers.   If numbered,  that is a lid for Crescent Ozark skillets.

There were 3 users of the bee hive lid.   Crescent Ozark,  O'Brien and O'Brien,  and Mi Pet

Post a picture of the inside of the lid,  and the bottom of the skillet.

Finally, here is a shot of the handle and the bottom of the pan. Note the O under the handle. I mentioned in my first post that the fit was sloppy, but perhaps that was unfair. When I invert the lid (as I do for storage), the outside diameter of the lid matches the outside diameter of the pan perfectly. So what the heck do I have here? Favorite made donut lids, but I thought they were different than this one. Thanks in advance! JVN

Well,  you got the inside of the lid posted before I finished posting.   That is a Crescent Ozark.   The Crescent Ozark #8 skillet is numbered 258.   A match!!!   The top of the handle looks like a Crescent Ozark skillet.   After I see the bottom I can tell you my opinion on the skillet,  but I am right now 75% sure you have a match.

Thanks Will. That sure looks like the Cresent lid on the foundry page. I was expecting to see markings on the skillet as well and was disappointed when it came out of the electro to find it unmarked.

AND! What is the 3 for on the lid?

I will say,  most of the unmarked skillets still have the 258 number on them.   How deep is your skillet?   Is it a chicken pan,  deep?   Look for ghost marks on the bottom.

Agree with Will, Cresent Foundry.  That lid is exactly like mine numbers and all.  My skillet is a deep with a 1 instead of the 2 like this one.
Have seen 3 styles of markings
1.  fully marked Cresent Foundry  Ozark St Louis Mo
2.  Just the three digit number with/with out a letter
3. no markings at all except for a single number bottom of handle.

Hi, Well it looks just like my O brien O brien and my lid fits perfectly. Same bee hive, handle and lid lips. No numbers on the skillet but the lid has a number 7 on the top over by the edge. Thanks, " Apron "

So how collectible are unmarked crescent skillets? Reason I ask is I saw a #8 that was in great shape with just 258 as the marking in an antique store for $10  another question would be how old is it :-/
