Unmarked mystery double skillet - Combo cooker
« on: January 12, 2010, 11:22:12 AM »
I have been going through y dad's collection for him and came across an interesting piece.  He has this double skillet of unknown (forgotten) origin that is almost entirely unmarked.

Any help with ID is greatly appreciated.

John, it looks to me like you have two parts of a three part cooker.

Perry I think your are right. That's two parts of a 3 part combo cooker.  I don't know who made it though.

Any idea who the maker was?

Also, what piece is missing?

John, you are missing the bottom piece. Its about 7 inches deep, and has two stubby U shaped handles on it that stick out about 2 inches, and they of course your deep part fits in that, and then the shallow skillet that you have there, goes on the top. And thats the combo cooker.

I think those are the top & middle pieces of a Blankenship
Combo Cooker, ca 1940.  Mike B had a very good post/write up over on the members side on several different types/makers.  The bottom piece has 2 loop style handles.

The bottom vessel Lowen shows looks Johnson to me. The bottom vessel for the piece in question will have notches for the cover to lock into like you see on the center piece John has pic'd.
Don't think it's Blankenship as Blankenship has reinforced handles and no notchs for the cover to lock into.
I had both the piece in question complete and a complete Johnson. They have since moved West.
Link to Blankensip patent and a pic of the Johnson.

I was happy that I pretty much guessed this final answer. And I was only able to do that because of watching and reading the experts here. Those Johnson's are really cool pieces. It would be better to see a whole set in use - at one time. If you want to let me borrow a set I will do that, take pictures and send the set back  8-) Seriously, I'd like to drive a set.

Were they ever actually used that way? I would guess more typically one or two pieces at any given time, but it would be fun to do a combo cook where the full set was working at once.

What does a full set run - I realize it's all about market, etc. etc, but whats the range that a full set goes for. Don't see them that often and when you do you only see parts not sets. Takes the "double skillet" to a whole new level  :D Literally.

Well Clark it made room for the odorless mech lid skillet I got. Upside is that they are still within the collecting community, and intact.

Ray I seem to remember a complete Johnson sell $150 on eBay couple years back. Would think 50 to75 would not be a bad price to find one complete and descent condition. Maybe little more??  I had around $60 in mine by the time I completed it.

Ray, I'm not cook but I don't think the combo sets were really intended to be used with all 3 pieces at once.  Looks to me like it could only be a double boiler with a lid and not sure what you would cook that way.???  My thoughts are you could buy the 3 piece set and and mix/match the pieces to have a variety of cooking utensils.

Like stated above it is the top 2 parts of a 3 piece set and the maker is unknown.  I've got the same 2 pieces pictured but still looking for the bottom vessel.  The only bottom I've seen for this set is the one that Ed had.  I've got the Johnson set, several of the Blankenship sets, and parts to several other unknown sets.  Bottom vessels/pots are the hardest to find.  Mike
