So just for the record what does something like that go for on the open market  And by rare, are we talking about less than 100?

Hello Charles.  :)

Just to be clear now Charles. Are you talking about that piece that has a glass globe on it, that also has another hole or outlet sticking up on it also, and it has a stamp on it, stamped Griswold? Is that what you are talking about?

Charles,  what you saw was a fake.   That "tag" that was on the oil lamp you saw was for a stove.

is that a one of a kind fake? or is that a fairly standard repro? someone did a pretty good job tearing that tag off an old stove, and riveting it on to that old lamp!!!!

Hello Jordan, now I don't know if somebody is building them or not, but, I do know we have seen this worthless piece of junk before, by "this", I don't necessarily mean this one right here but its twin, so unless this is the same one, there are more out there. See how it helps to belong to an Organization like this if one is interested in cast iron? We could have saved that person a lot of money, and for the price of 25.00 a year to be a subscribing member, its a very good deal, anyway, I hope that helps answer your question, and do feel free to ask any more that you may have.  :)

I remember when they first contacted us on that thing and it was determined that it was a fake.  He didn't like our assessment so he took it to the G&CICA and they basically said the same thing.  He then said he was going to bring it to the St. Louis convention, but it never showed up.  I don't who the guy is anymore but he made tidy sum on that piece of crap.  Too bad.

I haven't checked this in a while.  What I meant to ask is how many of the actual Griswold oil lamps are known to exist.  Also, I was asking what the definition of rare is when dealing with such items.

Sorry for the poor English.

Charles Griswold never made an oil lamp so there are none out there.  The one that just sold and all others are fake!!

The word rare is a bit troublesome at times.  IMO if you are not likely to run into that item again in the near future (even on ebay) then the item is probably rare.  There are a thousand definitions of rare  :-/

Has anyone compared the photos from the recent auction to those from that old thread? If I had to guess, I'd say its the same lamp. Or whatever it started life as. :)

Charles,   as others have stated,  there is no oil lamp.   I sure hope you were not the buyer and getting our opinion on it.   You won't like it.   Someone made it up.   It is the same oil lamp that we discussed a year ago.

Rare,  it has many meanings.    Rare also does not mean valuable.    Example,   there are a hand full of Blacklock tea kettles around.   They are pre Lodge.   They will not sell for more than $100     I have seen about 15 Erie spider skillets on ebay in the last 5 or 6 years.   They sell for $1500 to $3500 depending on how nice.   Rare don't = $$$$

Appreciate the concern, but I can't buy myself a soda much less something like that.  I was just curious on the now "mythical" Oil lamp.  One of these days I'll find my way to the darkside and absorb everything I can.

It's a shame I didn't know about the blacklock tea kettles because there was one at an antique store few months back that I saw for about 10-20 bucks, noted it and kept on walking, only because I was uninformed.

Oh well :-?
