Cast Iron Stove
« on: March 25, 2010, 09:34:09 AM »
I have the opportunity to buy a cast iron 4-burner stove for $150. I have attached a picture of the marking from the stove. I have not seen it first hand yet. Plan to later today or tomorrow. I was curious if anyone in familiar with this stove and if $150 would be a good price if it is not all rusted out.

Thanks......Gary

I wonder what that stove looks like? I can see the picture clearly alright. If you got your face about an inch from an elephant, you can see that area reeeel good, but if you step back some you can see a whole lot more. I was wondering what kind of stove it is. I like stoves.  :)

I went and looked at it and it seems like it is very solid. One small crack on one of the pieces that holds the covers. I am going to try and put up a couple more pictures. I bought it for $100.

Sorry about the big pictures. I made the pixels low, but I guess I am doing something wrong. I'll just post one more and maybe you can see it O.K.

Thanks for the help.

The stove has the following information on it:

Washington Pet
No. 8-17
Gray & Dudley Co.
Nashville
Tenn

On top of the stove it has "No." in one corner and "817" in the other corner.

My griddle is about 31" X 21" and looks like it would cover your stove top nicely, if the stack wasent there.

Ray I don't know if you know or not but that huge griddle you have was made by Wagner.  I have seen two of them and picked one of them up!!  I don't know how much it weighed but I didn't want to carry it from one end of the flea market to my truck  :)

Jeff,
I'm curious. Why do you say this was made by Wagner? I'm not disputing what you say, but I have never heard about it before.

That is a very good point Chris??  I just noticed the Cray and Dudley Co. marking.  I did not look at the close up of the markings before  :-[

Looks just like the U.S. 1942 griddle that, according to the RB, Wagner made.  Seems curious to me though.  Same size, same font, exact same style??  Check it out and see what you think.

After a couple of searches it appears that Gray and Dudley was a hardware company.  Their stoves were made(maybe not all) by Washington Stove and Range also of Nashville.  It is likely that they had other items made by other foundries as most large hardware companies did, maybe even the gridde pictured above.

Well after reading more not sure that my above info is correct.  Here is a link with a picture of a catalog and the front of the catalog says Gray and Dudley - Manufacturors of Washington Stove and Ranges.  So maybe Gray and Dudley did have a foundry.  ??????  Mike

Before I signed up here at wags I emailed Dave Smith, not having realized at the time he was a cast iron god so to speak. He asked for some pics of it so I sent him a bunch of pics. He figured Gray & Dudley made it for the U.S. military in 1941. I have searched the intenet several times looking for informatin on Gray & Dudley with very little results. Periodicly I look on ebay and some other internet sources of cast iron and have only seen a few items for sale, none of them were CI just old catalogs or other paper things. The catalog, from what I was told, contained mostly stoves.

Maybe it possible that Wagner owned or traded with Grey & Dudley. Got any pics of your griddle Jeff?

Im not sure how Grey & Dudley and Washington Stove were connected but If I if my memory is working correctly Washington Stove was a retailer and had G&D making items for them.

I don't own one Ray as I didn't want to lug it a mile  ;D ;D

I wonder how they came to the conclusion that the 1942 griddle in the RB was made by Wagner??  I have also seen one that says Wagner so I am assuming that was made by them  :-/  Maybe it was made for them by Grey and Dudley??

I sure am glad I screwed that up because this is interesting.  ;D  I like Mike's info!

I have a Wagner marked one.  It has an earlier date somewhere in the 30's.  It also has a hairline crack :-[  If I were to guess, I would guess the military contracted with Wagner then other foundries to make these.  They may have bought the pattern and perhaps took it to each foundry along with their contracts.  The new maker would  would then add their name on them.  I think the same thing happened with Sears and their Puritan line of cookware.
