What is this?
« on: March 29, 2010, 04:26:41 PM »
I picked this up at the cast iron junkyard a while back. Its cast iron....and has the number 12 and 14 on either end depending on how its sitting.
When its sitting on 14 its wider...and the same when you invert it...its larger at the top. I am pretty sure its cast iron, and I sat a big 3 legged 8 gallon stew pot on it..and it fit like a glove. But not sure if that is whats its made for or not. Thanks

I have seen those holding three legged kettles before.  I would guess that is what they were intended to be used for??

I think they were stands for hot water heaters.  I've seen a photo of one in a catalog that showed it.  I'll see if I can find the picture.

I agree with Roger. A stand for a hot water tank that was piped to a wood burning stove. The tank would be right beside the stove. This was brought up on a thread sometime back and I think it was Joel that told us what it was.

Not the same design, but will give you an idea of how the hot water heater was set-up in Perry's day. ;D

Now I am not disagreeing with you guys on this things purpose but why does this piece has the same feet on both ends (with the U shaped female part thingy???).  I would have to assume that there was more to this stand at one point in time (besides the obvious water tank)??

You could probably use the same stand for 2 different size tanks by flipping it over.

I wonder if the water heater tanks were sized 12 and 14 that matches the numbers on the piece?
