Martin Fatso stove
« on: May 08, 2010, 06:34:58 PM »
I found a Martin Stove and Range "Fatso" stove Thursday. I didn't get a chance to check it out, as I was leaving in a hurry to pick up my grandson who was sick at school. Anyone know anything about these? What are they worth, depending on condition.

That's the stove that caused bad feelings, for a while, between BS&R and Martin Stove. BS&R had a stove called the Big Boy that sold well. Martin later came out with the exact same stove, called it the Fatso, but it was 5 cents cheaper. BS&R's loyal customers all went with the cheaper Martin Stove. Mr. Jones, of BS&R, called up Mr. Martin, mad as hell. He was mad that Martin had stole BS&R's design, but was also mad that Martin sold theirs for less. According to the story Mr Martin told Mr. Jones that Martin had to sell the Fatso for less then BS&R's Big Boy because it was a 1/4" smaller!! Martin had gone out bought a BS&R Big Boy Stove and took it apart and used the parts as a master pattern for the Fatso.
As ole Paul Harvey used to say, now you know the rest of the story.
Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.
