blue piqua waffle iron
« on: May 14, 2010, 12:40:36 PM »
This is the iron I asked about a few weeks ago, The black iron and handles are in good condition but the blue enamel has white stains that look and feel like hard water stains. Would bleach remove the blue from the enamel? Rub vinegar on it? I dont want to scrub it with anything abrasive but at the same time I would like to brighten the blue as much as possible. Any help will be much appreciated, Thanks, Tony

Yes, I see it Clark. The tall base round one, of the blue porcelains. As far as cleaning this Anthony, yes, you must take care with what you use, some nonabrasive. As a suggestion you might try just plain soap and water, Dawn Dishwashing liquid, and then I'd rinse it in cold water, and try buffing it with a nice soft cloth. But I am afraid if you use something a bit stronger you might do more damage than good.  :-/

How about  "bar keepers friend"  for getting it clean.   It don't scratch porcelain sinks.  Any idea about it???

The way I did the blue Fav skillet on this forum somewhere, was as Perry said. I used hot water and dish soap and scrubbed it, with dish cloth.. A few stubborn spots still using water and soap I used "0000" steel wool and ever so gently went over it. If it would not come off with light pressure, I let it soak longer and hit with steel wool gently again. It took awhile but it was worth it in the end...
  Great find Anthony

Finished with cleaning the porcelain base, used bkf to remove the white scale. Now for the paddles--the wood handles are attached with what appear to be a rivet, do you just drive the rivet out from the bottom?

Anthony that is what I have done before.  Sometimes they are a real pain in the rear and it takes forever to peen them out.  One time I had to make new ones because I ended up having to drill them out.  I hope you don't have that kind of trouble!!

Jeff, what did you make the replacement pins out of?  I mean, just in case anything goes wrong, which it never does. ;)

Now I think I used #9 wire (that is what it reminded me of but it was just a piece of scrap that I had)?? I don't think it was as hard as the originals but it was certainly easier to deal with.  I sold that waffle iron so I have no idea how it held up but I would sure think it would be just fine??
