ID help
« on: December 13, 2013, 12:18:14 PM »
Howdy!  A friend asked me if I could try and clean this one up for him...what an ugly, neglected piece of iron this is...

Originally thought Lodge when I saw the raised 8, but no breaks in the heat ring, or markings of any kind on the bottom.  Then I took the lid off and was completely baffled.

Does that configuration of dimples on the lid look familiar to anyone?

It's really, really heavy--even the lid weighs a ton.  And yes, the assist tab is broken off.

Any thoughts would be appreciated :)

Jodi, I am thinking BSR.... at least that lid.

Hopefully a BSR expert will stop by and confirm... or deny! ;D

Michael, thanks for the input, but it's not Lodge. One of the characteristics that defines Lodge lids is they have basting  spikes not dimples like this one.

Cheryl, I thought maybe BSR, but their dimples are usually sorta random.  The circle with the rays is what confused me... that and no "V" on the underside of the handle.  :-?

Don't think it's a marriage.  The raised 8 on the handle matches the one on the lid and they fit together like a glove.  And, as I said, both are very heavy.

I was hoping that someone would recognize the distinct pattern in the basting dimples...

About that snow--we're going to be on the southern edge of the storm.  They are predicting rain/freezing rain...yuck, I'd rather have snow!

I don't think that is Lodge or BSR.   There were some foundries who copied those designs.   The inside of the lid has the dimples like BSR, but the handle is wrong.   Where is Dwayne or Tom P. when you need them.   :-?

Is there any molders marks on that skillet? My first thought was a Lodge skillet, and I'm not sure on that lid. Older BS&R lids have a more random pattern with the dimples. Hopefully Tom will see this, he has a greater collection of BS&R than I.

I have one like it. When I posted mine a couple of years ago it was a opinion of several that it was US made, old but an unknown maker and not Lodge or BSR. Mine is very smooth, with real good quality, but rather heavy. But nowhere near as heavy as a AB&I
