A really good day.
« on: December 21, 2013, 12:40:22 PM »
I was having dinner with friends last night, and one of them brought me a skillet to look at.  I had cleaned another little skillet for him and he was impressed.

So, the lead up was "I don't think this one is as interesting (the other one was a 40s-50s Lodge), it is out of my dad's garage and came from the family of his second wife. I'm sure she doesn't really care about it".

So I looked at it.  Heavily crusted, some numbers, and a handle that I knew wasn't Lodge.  I said "it feels really nice, and this handle is interesting.  Do you want me to clean it for you?" He said, well, if you want to.  In fact, if it never comes back from your house, that's ok".

This happened to be the night of an annual candlelight dinner, so no lights in the house were on, so it took me awhile to catch the glint of one little corner of who made it through the crust. Even with the numbers I didn't think it was a mystery Wagner.

I think I might have squealed.  He assured me it was fine if I kept it.

Yep. I do know. :) I confirmed when I got home.  I'm beside myself.  :D

I was trying to play it cool, so he would still let me keep it!

Congrats Rebecca!  #6's aren't all that easy to find.

I'm anxious to see pictures when you have it all dolled up. :)

Thanks everyone. :)))

It's in the lye now. I'll be sure to post updates. It was really a thrill. I realize you all have fancy CI,  but other than Babette (my c. 1850 roaster) this will be my most fancy pants pan.

Wonderful find, Rebecca (and what a great friend for letting you keep it!) :)

I don't have a lot of fancy pieces either, so I know your excitement when you come across something like this. If you think finding it was fun, just wait until you cook in it. They're fantastic!

Rebecca, we all started with little or nothing.  The fun part is finding things like you just did.  They tend to accumulate over time and next thing you know, where did all this come from? ;) ;D

I guess you lost me, what is it? I've got a #8 that looks kind of like that, and the only mark is the 8.
It has a little pitting on the cook surface, and gas pitting, but it is very well made. Thought it to be an unmarked Wagner, but all the Wagners I've seen of that style have crude grinding around the edges.

It's an ERIE.

And #6's are HTF (as Sandy stated).... so, it's a good day when you snag one at a hefty price, and a glorious day when it is gifted (free)!

Now me, I don't cook in my #6's... they are wall hanger's for sure.

Including the #6 Erie Handled griddle and #6 Slant Gris Handled griddle, resting behind me in the Display Case! :) :)

(Got myself a Christmas Present at Auction 2 hours ago....  8-) )
Pics later after I brave the hordes out there, still shopping.........

Any surefire way to tell if my #8 is an Erie or not? Like I said, it only has an 8 on it.

Oops, maybe I shouldn't have encouraged Rebecca to cook in it. I knew the 6 was a tough find, but I guess I didn't realize just how tough, and that you might want to keep that one aside for display.

But the ERIEs ARE fun cookers. I only have a 7 and a 10; I fell in love when I got my first, and will definitely be looking for more.

So, Rebecca, maybe you won't want to cook in this after all. But once you see the simple elegance of your ERIE when it's all cleaned up, you may be going on the hunt for another!

Karen, I pick up the sulphur pitted and less than perfect ERIES for users.
I just had to restrip my #7 because dummy me let it sit over the oven vent while I was roasting a roast.... :D  What a mess! (and I knew better, just wasn't paying attention).
My Number 9 Erie was supposed to be a wall hanger, until the first round of seasoning revealed a hairline in the side wall.. :'(  It is now a user, too!

Shane, need good pictures as described above in How to Post Pictures thread, and then 'maybe'.... :)
