Need help id'ing a number 7 skillet
« on: February 02, 2014, 12:52:36 PM »
This was my first cast iron skillet, it belonged to my grandmother (1911-2008) it's a spinner so it has no collecting value. But it means more to me than anything. I've always wondered who made it. It has no markings other than a #7 and a D

It has a fire ring, even though it is very worn down.

A very nice older Lodge. The raised number on the handle, the heat ring, this one is solid, the molder's mark, the nice wide graceful pouring lips, nice thin casting, smooth as a baby's butt, lightweight, all say Lodge. Can you tell I like them?

As far as being a spinner, who cares, it'll cook just fine, it may even out out when heated while cooking, if not, so what. Now if you have kids you have to make sure they know the history of this pan, and see you using it. That way it will have value to them when they get older, and hopefully it will get passed on and remain in the family.

That is a 90 year old Lodge.   Keep it and use it!!!   Nice you have it.   Priceless.

It's my go to skillet for biscuits or cornbread. Don't matter if I cook them on the stove like my grandma or in the oven. You almost got to hold on to them or they will fly out.

I'd give anything to have my grandmothers old skillets. No one knows what happened to them or what they even were..but a lot of good stuff came out of them. You're lucky, Aaron.  ;)

I bought this for 35 bucks on ebay, I can take better pictures tomorrow. I've used it 5 or 6 times it works wonderful. The ad said it was from the 1860's is it safe to use? I don't want to damage it in any way. It's completely flat no warpage, heavy enough if you drop it the worlds axis shifts.

It's a number 12 well about the same measurements as a number 12. It has no markings on it anywhere It has some defects from the casting that you can see in the picture, they are kind of deep, I don't use it over high heat only medium low and let the pan come to temperature.

Aaron,
Looking at the pictures, the style, and what appears to be double gate marks on the bottom, and absence of markings, I would say it is a recast, produced using another skillet to make a mold.
The original skillet used, probably would have been produced sometime in the 1900 - 1920 time frame, the recast made (?) by (?).

Yep,  this is a copy of a skillet.   Not worth much,  but can be a great user.

A.  When you see this style skillet reminiscent of ERIE and Older Wagners, Favorite, and others (Meaning outer HR, handle style etc)..  all of which were 'side-gated' not bottom gated.

B.  Double gate marks
C. Casting irregularities, including the noticable air pockets.
Lack of any identifying marks, or ghosting even.

This Texas Panhandle boy can give you an answer. That reinforcing pad where the handle attaches is more modern than the bottom gating. Sorta like if you found a 50's Chevy that had gas headlights. They don't go together.

I understand, I just don't see the point of recasting a skillet. Do the voids effect the pan? Can I use it everyday. My grandma grew up near Crockett tx.

Aaron if I was you I would not ever completely clean and re-season your grandma's pan. There is 90 years of love baked in the patina on that nice old Lodge.
