Displaying or Storing Griswold Skillet Covers
« on: May 27, 2015, 06:33:32 PM »
I have six (6) Griswold fully marked (top and bottom) low dome skillet covers.  As I don’t want to sell or give the covers away, I think that leaves me with two other choices.  I can either store them or display them. Can anyone post pictures of how they display their covers, or let me know how they safely store them?

Copied our Griswold Dutch oven stand for skillets.  Little space for all the skillets and covers.  Used a Griswold stove tag for the top.

I was at a friends house and he had his lids hanging on the wall with plate display hangers. I thought they looked very nice because the hangers don't obstruct the front of the lid. (just 4 little wires).

Trevor, I have done some with the plate hangers also, looks pretty nice, just question how secure they are though.

Same with me. I have seen these hangers but I would not want to trust them with a cast iron lid. I like the stand idea much better. Even if its a stand that would only fit lids. I was thinking a three leg stand and then have the lids from the largest at the bottom to the smallest at the top. And the rungs would be at an angle and not flat and spaced far enough apart that you could see the lid real good. Thats what I was thinkin anyway.  :-/

The only problem with this one is that it is tall when you have sizes 3-14. This one is about 6 foot tall.  Wouldn't be as tall for covers only.

Hello Brian. The lid stand would need to be to be spaced out and tall enough so that you can see the lids in it. And be able to get the lids in and out easily. And if you put the number 14 lid on the bottom it would have enough support at the bottom so that it would not be easily tipped over. My thoughts.  :)

Agreed Perry.  I would have liked more space for each set but didn't want it to be any taller.  It's heavy and won't easily tip but would like to be able to see a little more of each.

Brian I like what you have right there and I think it has plenty of room for a skillet with the lid. I'm not exactly sure how tall a rack would have to be just for lids but thats what I'm talking about. The skillets I have room on the walls, for some anyway. So I would just want a rack for the lids, 3 through 14, and have them sitting at an angle so the bottom of the lid would be supported by two of the legs and the back of the skillet would be supported by one of the legs. I don't know if I am saying that exactly correct so that its understood or not.  :-/ ;D

Now I get it and the curved surface under the lid would help hold it in place since its slanted a little.  A great idea Perry!

Here is a picture of somewhat of what I am talking about. I had a friend to make these racks for me. So you see how each tier sits flat, it would be at an angle, like Brian is talking about. And since its only lids, it would not have to be as high. How high? High enough to hold all the lids and have enough space between them so that you could see them. So the great big 14 would be at the bottom and the little three would be at the top and at each level it would gradually get smaller.

Hello Blake. Yes I like the idea too. I like the Griswold made ones too. But these do just fine. I have a couple three of them. Each one of the spaces is different so it took some measuring. I think it came out alright. I'm trying to get somebody to make one for the lids like I am talking about here.

I wonder if we could have a workshop at a WAGS convention where participants would pay a fee, the materials would be provided and someone would teach how to assemble the stand?  I can almost bet we would set attendance records at cast iron collecting conventions. :o

Hello Jim. I have thought maybe one could use large threaded dowl rods and you can just thread them in place and you are good to go. Mine are not made that way but I was thinking about the dowl rods.  :-/

Perry, since the rack tapers from bottom to top wouldn't threaded dowel rods go into the poles at an angle?  I would be concerned it would make the rack a little unstable.
