Hosting a Cleaning and Seaoning Workshop

I've been contacted by Larry Foxx, and was  asked to host a cleaning, and seasoning workshop at the convention. This will be the first time I've done anything like this, so I'll be looking for input from fellow members. Since there are so many diffrent methods, especially in the area of seasoning cast iron, I'll be looking for assistance from any member willing to share their experience. Chuck,  talk to Ed A.   He did an electro cleaning in Chattanooga.   It was good.   But now we have so many new members joining that it needs to be updated for them.

Ed's best performance was when after telling and demostrating the elctricity flowing thru the water and with all these wires going in out of the water and everybody sitting on the edge of their chairs he stuck his hand in the water....boy did that get a "reaction"....It was great showmanship....You have a tough act to follow Chuck...

Hello Paul, yes, I remember that well. I had to go to my room and change my underwear after Eds demonstration. I believe he acted like he slipped or something and everybody gasped in horror, I know I did. I figured that was the end of Ed, right before our very eyes, and so did a lot of other people.  ;D ;D ;D

Chuck, you should build a "mini tank" and clean an ashtray. Then season it in a toaster oven. That would be cool! I have a 13.8 volt 3 amp power supply that might work great.

This is the set up I threw together for the Tenn. convention. Not the same one I used at Sidney.
  This one here we cleaned two toy skillets at once. One all carboned up, the other was rusted real good. We let it run for 2hrs, (I think??) Left,then we all came back, that way folks could see results in both cases.
 The pieces of milk crate I zip tied to the SS in case some one bumped into the set up while running.
   When I did the demo in Sidney we did not allow time for the set up to work and show results. It was more of a how to set it up.
   We allowed more time in Tenn, so members could actually see what happens..

Ed, would you mind a repeat performance, minus the electrocution?  ;) I don't want to just have me up ther rambling on about cleaning, and seasoning. This being a "workshop", this is a chance for any of us to demonstrate how we clean our iron.

I'm also looking for someone who is good with aluminum cleaning. Someone willing to do a demonstration of their magic with getting it shining again.

Just remember, as it was put to me, this is like a big B.S. session on cleaning, and seasoning. Nothing super formal or anything. Just a bunch of cast iron folks talking among themselves.

Still debating on doing a mini electro set up. Since it's been done twice before, I'm not sure it's needed. Does anyone think that there will be enough new people there, that don't have access to the forum? We have the "how to" for electro right here. Larry Foxx had also mentioned that it probably wasn't needed.

Any other suggestions for the workshop will be great. Remember, it's a group participation thing, so there better be plenty of folks chiming in. It will get pretty boring looking at me up there.

An electro tank would be nice, but   pictures and handouts may get the same results.  Maybe you can  also address the problem of the member that lives in an apartment building .  Lye ,  a self cleaning oven or even oven cleaner  for the member that only has or wants to clean  6 or 8 users.  

 It's your show.  If you feel  more comfortable doing the electro setup and showing everyone how to get those beautiful black finishes then that's  what  I would do.  Dick

And Michelle, lean up here real close, I wanna whisper in your ear, thats better, I don't want everybody to hear this, but, I don't drink or play golf either. I might have A beer every couple months or so, but thats it. Last beer I had was in April when I visited my friend in Pa that I work with. BUT, if Greg Stahl is buyin, I will drink one of his beers.  ;) ;D

The cleaning demonstrating session is history for 2010.  I have just a few impressions that I want to make about it and Chucks' performance.

1.  Chuck was not in the least nervous.

2.  Despite what many of us think, Chuck's lovely wife Deb is not the one who actually does the electro work in the house with Chuck as the assistant and gofer.

3.  Finally, Chuck actually knows what he is doing when it comes to clean CI both with lye and his preferred method electro.  He even has a good handle on seasoning.  Remember Chuck, grapeseed oil, not olive oil.   ;D
