Genuine Griswold #9?
« on: September 29, 2014, 08:12:32 PM »
First time poster here, but I have trolled the site off and on since buying my first cast iron three years ago. I'm a total goon for them but only own modern day Lodge pans, which I HATE because they're unground (which is a step backward in cast iron progress IMHO).

I came across a great Griswold #9 skillet at a thrift store this weekend but have doubts about its authenticity given its markings. I would appreciate any comments on its authenticity and/or age. Disregard the golden coloring around the Griswold logo...wasn't thinking and took a bronze wire brush to it momentarily  :-/.

The cross-logo reads "GRISWOLD" in serif lettering, with "11 1/4 INCH SKILLET" underneath, and an "A" on the underside of the handle.

Hi Joe, no harm in trolling, glad you posted.  I believe this was made by Wagner after they acquired the Griswold name and trademarks in 1957.  These pieces were mostly made in Sidney, OH and thus no reference to Erie, PA on them.  No particular collector value to them, should be fine as a user piece.  IMO a $15-20 skillet, others may have a more informed opinion.
The good chefs never burn anything--we call it "culinary brown"!!

Thanks for the speedy and informative response Randy. It was 'expensive' as far as thrift store prices go at $13, but still a great investment by any other measure in my book. While I'm sad to hear its not uber collectible, I did buy it to use so no tears will be shed on that account. Thanks again for the info!
